Vice President Lai Ching-te said that Taiwan is committed to working with Caribbean and Latin American countries to further its contributions to the international community.

Lai made the remarks April 26 while receiving a delegation from the Caribbean and Latin American Formosa Club chapters at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.

According to Lai, while Taiwan is a sovereign country and has the right to engage in global affairs, the country’s efforts to do so are constrained by the interference of an authoritarian regime. He added that Taiwan remains undeterred and will continue to safeguard its freedom and democracy even as it maintains regional peace and stability.

The vice president expressed deep appreciation for club members’ multipronged advocacy for Taiwan’s international participation, including publishing social media posts, writing and signing letters to leaders of international organizations and passing resolutions in their respective countries’ legislative bodies.

In response, Ruben Horacio Manzi, member of Argentina’s Chamber of Deputies, spoke on behalf of the delegation and emphasized the importance that all group members place on upholding the values of freedom, democracy and diversity. He additionally praised Taiwan’s transparent system and pursuit of technological development.

Manzi expressed best wishes to the people of Taiwan for their happiness and prosperity, adding that he had no doubt that Taiwan would continue to serve as a beacon of democracy. (YCH-E)
